Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about how Tutors.Directory works for parents, students and independent tutors in the UK.
- What is Tutors.Directory?
- Tutors.Directory is a UK listing directory for independent private tutors. Parents and students search listings by subject, level, location and hourly rate, then contact tutors directly. Tutors pay an annual subscription to be listed; clients pay nothing and no commission is taken from lessons.
- How much does it cost parents and students?
- Nothing. Browsing listings, contacting tutors and posting a teaching request are free for parents and students, and Tutors.Directory takes no commission or booking fee from any lesson you arrange.
- How much does it cost tutors to be listed?
- £99 per year, after a 14-day free trial. That includes an unlimited public listing, a leads inbox, and the option to keep your email and phone number hidden while still receiving enquiries through the site.
- Is Tutors.Directory a tutoring agency?
- No. Tutors.Directory is a directory, not an agency. We do not employ, manage, supervise or endorse tutors, we do not set their rates, and we are not a party to lessons, payments or scheduling. Tutors are independent and responsible for their own service.
- What does "DBS certificate on file" mean on a tutor listing?
- It means the tutor has supplied a DBS certificate number and we have confirmed the document exists. We do not publish certificate numbers or details, and we do not carry out DBS checks ourselves. Always ask to see the original certificate before or at the first lesson.
- How do I choose a tutor safely?
- Do your own checks before lessons begin. Ask to see the original DBS certificate and any qualifications, request references, hold a short introductory call, and for under-18s keep an adult present or lessons in a shared space. Our checks and due diligence page sets out a practical checklist.
- How do I find a tutor near me?
- Enter your town, city or postcode on the directory page and search. Results are sorted by distance from your location, filtered to tutors within a sensible travel radius, and you can narrow by subject, level, hourly rate and whether the tutor travels to you, teaches at their own place, or teaches online.
- Can I find online tutors as well as in-person ones?
- Yes. Tutors who teach online appear in searches regardless of distance, so you can compare local in-person tutors and online tutors side by side.
- What subjects and levels are covered?
- Academic subjects from KS1 through GCSE and A-Level, instrumental and vocal tuition from beginner to Grade 8 and diploma level, and vocational or hobby subjects at introductory through advanced levels. Each listing states the exact subjects and levels that tutor teaches.
- How do I contact a tutor?
- Send an enquiry from the tutor's listing. Tutors who publish their contact details can also be emailed or called directly; tutors who keep details private receive your enquiry in their inbox on the site and reply to you.
- Do you refund tutor subscriptions?
- Subscriptions are non-refundable as standard because Tutors.Directory is a business-to-business service, but we will consider a discretionary refund on request within 30 days of a new subscription or a renewal where circumstances are reasonable.
- How does a tutor get listed?
- Create a tutor account, complete the onboarding steps (your details, subjects and levels, area and travel preferences, hourly rate and DBS information), and submit the listing for review. Listings go live once approved, and you can switch your listing between live and hidden at any time.
